Abstract

Brainstorming is becoming one of those pop-words that designers throw around too easily these days. It is probably for this reason, new and more intellectual alternatives have appeared over the years (design thinking), to rescue the act of genuine creative thinking from this transparent version of designers simply doodling, whilst referring to easily found internet references. The key issues for making an effective brainstorming event are; good management, experienced participants, organised data, knowing how to identify opportunities, and ultimately satisfy the requirements of the brief.
Since the 1990’s, I have experimented with several brainstorming methods to find that a ‘playing field’ or ‘game’ approach, to be more effective when creating new ideas. Therefore, I have adapted these traditional brainstorming methods to create (1) LINEAR, and (2) RADIAL, named after their building flow. Both have proven successful on numerous occasions, developing new business opportunities, international exposure and awards for companies and institutions. I do not claim to have invented a better way of brainstorming. However, over the past 26 years of my professional and academic career, I have participated and orientated in many idea-generating exercises using these techniques for product, industrial, furniture, interior and automotive design, and it is these
methods and outcomes I would like to share.
